Kevin Davis
An award-winning Chicago based journalist & author of three books about the criminal justice system: “The Wrong Man”, “Defending the Damned” & “The Brain Defense” as well as the managing editor of the ABA Journal, the national legal affairs magazine of the American Bar Association. Davis has written extensively about wrongful convictions, the growing use of neuroscience in the courtroom, & the challenges facing those coming home from prison.
This Power Hour will explore how the criminal justice system has long recognized that those suffering from diseases of the mind should not necessarily be held responsible for their actions to the same degree as their mentally healthy counterparts – that these unfortunate lawbreakers deserved some measure of mercy because they lacked the ability to make rational or voluntary choices.
The Brain Defense is not about excusing people but offering understanding & taking into account their mental health, addictions, & other factors uncontrollable. Mr. Davis will also share his personal experiences covering wrongful convictions & the reasons people confess to crimes they have not committed.
