In August 2013, Barack Obama chose Bayard Rustin as the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. On November 23, 2013, Walter Naegle, Rustin’s partner and BRCSJ Board Member Emeritus, accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Rustin’s behalf from President Obama during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House. This posthumous award was presented 26 years after Rustin's passing and was an acknowledgement and honor long overdue.
