Bayard Rustin sits in conversation with Nnamdi Azikiwe, one of Africa’s foremost independence leaders, during Rustin’s travels in West Africa.
Nnamdi Azikiwe, known as “Zik,” was a leading Nigerian nationalist, journalist, and political thinker who became Nigeria’s first president after independence in 1963. His vision and leadership were instrumental in Nigeria’s anti-colonial movement. Rustin’s encounters with Azikiwe strengthened transatlantic ties between African and African American freedom movements, highlighting the international dimensions of anti-colonial and civil rights struggles during the era of global decolonization.
