Bayard Rustin sits with Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and other officials during a gathering at the All India Congress Party. This historic meeting occurred during Rustin's pivotal journey to India to study Gandhian principles of nonviolent resistance.
Just months after India's independence in 1947, Rustin traveled to India on behalf of the Fellowship of Reconciliation to study nonviolent resistance methods. Although Gandhi had been assassinated before Rustin's arrival, he was able to meet with Nehru and other Congress Party leaders. This experience profoundly shaped Rustin's philosophy and strategic approach to civil rights activism, directly influencing his later role in organizing nonviolent protests and the March on Washington.
