During his 1948 tour of India, Rustin deeply engaged with Gandhian nonviolence and grassroots peace leaders. This encounter, including time with Lester, significantly shaped Rustin’s commitment to nonviolence and informed his later strategies for social justice and civil rights organizing in the United States.
